How far in advance should I schedule my session?
I am typically booked 3-4 weeks in advance throughout the year. During the Holiday Season (August-October) I am booked about 6-8 weeks in advance. All sessions for Christmas cards/gifts must be completed by November 1st to ensure delivery by Christmas.
What can I expect at a session?
You can expect for everyone to have fun! I want sessions to feel like a playdate for children so laughing, playing, singing, etc. are encouraged. When children feel the pressure to sit still and smile on cue, they will often end up doing the opposite. Giving them the freedom to be themselves allows me the opportunity to capture those perfect moments that bring out their unique personality.
Where should my session take place?
All my work is done on location using natural light. Think about what look you want your photographs to have, as well as where your child will feel comfortable and relaxed. Sessions can be at a nearby park, an urban spot with vibrant colors and funky walls, or at your home. If you are wanting a session in your home, it is important that there is good natural light streaming in through the windows. I am more than happy to help you find the location that is perfect for your session. Browse my online galleries and the blog to determine the location styles that inspire you!
What time of day is best?
As a natural light photographer I try to avoid using artificial lighting: flashes, studio lights, etc. Generally light is best in the morning and late afternoon/early evening. But determining when your child is happiest is the most important factor when scheduling a time for your session.
What should my child wear?
This is the fun part! Bright colors, layers, and textures are perfect for kids and can help show off their unique personality. Your child should be comfortable, so I suggest avoiding formal clothing, all white, and even shoes. For siblings and families, outfits should coordinate but do not need to be matching. A detailed guide on what to wear will be available on the client site after you book your session.
Do you photograph families as well?
Of course! I prefer to photograph families in a very casual setting that is stress-free and fun for everyone. My goal is to capture candid moments of you interacting as a family rather than focusing on the “say cheese and look at the camera” pictures. I believe that documenting the true spirit of your family will result in the images are the most treasured and timeless. Family sing-a-longs, games, and tickle wars are strongly encouraged!
Newborns:
When should I contact you about booking a newborn session?
Newborns are photographed within the first two weeks, ideally when they are between 5-8 days old. This is when they have what we photographers call the “curl” factor and are much more willing to sleep for us. Please call to discuss the scheduling of your session while you are pregnant. Calling as far in advance as possible is best to ensure a spot on the calendar. I will tentatively schedule your session on your due date and once your baby arrives, we will adjust the date accordingly.
What can I expect at a newborn session?
Newborn sessions typically last 2-4 hours with plenty of time for breaks and feedings. Simple is best when it comes to newborns as clothes often don’t fit their tiny bodies. I will, however, bring a fabulous collection of blankets, baskets, hats, and swaddling blankets to create their “outfit”.
I missed the 2 week window for a newborn session. What is the next best age to schedule a session? At 3-4 months or whenever they are comfortable lifting their head while on their tummy is the next best age. Even better is around 6-7 months when they are sitting up well. This is when their personalities really start to come through.
